Project for my Students – Part 1

Since I am starting to teach in the middle of the school year, I thought that it would be appropriate for me to have my students do a project that would be traditionally considered a beginning of the year project.  I figured that I would have them do an All About Me Presentation.  Honestly, I don’t care how they put their presentation together.  But, besides giving them an outline of what should be included, I figured that it was fair for me to give them an example.  The options that I’m going to present to them include Comic Life (on Mac for those of you who don’t know) and PowerPoint.  They will also be able to draw a poster, use Garage Band (also a Mac thing), make a book, collage, or any other ideas they have that will include all the information.

What I am looking to find out is all about my students.  I want to know about their families, their hobbies, their pets, their siblings, their plans for after high school and their hopes and dreams (at least the ones that they are willing to share).

I want them to be risk-takers and share a bit of themselves.  So, I worked on my own presentations.  I did one in Comic Life and one PowerPoint.  They are different, but contain much of the same information.

Comic Life was lots of fun.  It gave me the chance to make fun of myself and be a bit silly.  I think that it is important for students to know that I am willing to laugh at myself.  Of course, I also made fun of Chris (how could I not).  The PowerPoint was not as much fun to do and was more traditional – it involved less risk-taking.  But I wanted my students to have the opportunity to show their personalities through this project.

I really hope that the kids won’t disappoint me.  I have so many fun things planned for them and really can’t wait to get started.  Realistically, I don’t expect that they will have as much fun as I did, but maybe they will surprise themselves and me.

You can view my Comic Life presentation if you click on the link.  There are some errors (purposely), so I have some build-in teachable moments about proofreading, etc.  Just don’t tell the kids I planned them!  It does take a while to load and then you have to Zoom Out to see a whole page at a time.  But I think that it is worth the time. The PowerPoint will follow in a few days (I’m still trying to get it finished).
